Tucker Perkins to keynote virtual Green Bus Summit

Tucker Perkins, president and CEO of the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), will provide this year’s keynote address at the Green Bus Summit Virtual Conference, presented by School Transportation News, April 20-22.

Perkins will take the virtual stage at 11 a.m. Eastern on April 20. Titled “Accelerating Decarbonization with Propane School Buses,” Perkins’ address will detail why more than 1,000 school districts across the country are investing in propane autogas to provide a clean, safe ride to school for their students without sacrificing the performance, affordability and reliability required of a school bus, according to PERC. Perkins will also compare propane autogas buses to other alternative energy solutions and detail how propane autogas school buses are the best option to accelerate the decarbonization of the school transportation market fastest.

DOE SuperTruck 3 to Focus on Truck Electrification

The third installment of the Department of Energy’s SuperTruck research and development funding project will focus on electric and fuel-cell trucks, and will address a broader range of vehicles than the tractor-trailers involved in the first two projects.

Secretary Jennifer Granholm announced $100 million in funding for SuperTruck 3 during a webinar April 15. Joining that webinar was the North American Council for Freight Efficiency, which also is focusing on electric trucks in its Run on Less Electric demonstration project this year.

The initial SuperTruck project, launched in 2009 by the DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, aimed to improve heavy-duty tractor-trailer freight efficiency by 50%.

A few weeks ago, the American division of the global German automaker began delivering the first substantial volumes of its electric SUV ID.4 to showrooms across the U.S. with the goal to have at least one at every VW dealer in America. “We’re quite proud. We want this to be a 100 percent nationwide launch with over 650 dealers,” said VW’s Keogh in an interview.

To combat the historic dealer problem, VW wanted to “fully attack and address this challenge full stop,” Keogh said.

RNG Provided Over Half of On-Road Fuel Used in Natural Gas Vehicles

NGVAmerica and the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG Coalition) say 53% of all on-road fuel used in natural gas vehicles in 2020 was renewable natural gas (RNG).

Captured above ground from organic material in agricultural, wastewater, landfill or food waste, RNG can produce carbon-negative results when fueling on-road vehicles like short- and long-haul trucks, transit buses, and refuse and recycling collection vehicles. The California Air Resources Board’s Q3 2020 data confirms that the energy weighted carbon intensity (CI) value of California’s RNG vehicle fuel portfolio in its Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) program is carbon-negative and below zero, at -17.95 gCO2e/MJ.

DOE to spend $61.4M on biofuels research

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Energy announced it would be providing $61.4 million in funding for research, development, and deployment of technologies that produce low-cost, low carbon biofuels.

The funding is aimed at finding renewable resources to power heavy-duty vehicles like airplanes and ships that are difficult to electrify and to accelerate the country’s path to a net-zero emissions economy by 2050, the DOE said.

“Biofuels are one of our most promising paths to zero-carbon aviation and shipping, so it’s time to double down on R&D and begin to deploy these technologies at scale,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “This funding is critical for decarbonizing the transportation sector—the largest source of our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions—and delivering good-paying union jobs and clean air and water to American communities.”

Hyliion Forms Council to Pilot Hybrid Natural Gas – Electric Powertrain

Hyliion Holdings Corp., a company that specializes in electrified powertrain solutions for Class 8 semi-trucks, has formed the Hypertruck Innovation Council, a select group of fleet, logistics and transportation companies that will support the development of Hyliion’s Hypertruck powertrain solution.

The Hyliion Hypertruck ERX is an electric powertrain charged by natural gas for Class 8 commercial trucks designed to provide a long-haul, electric powertrain solution that delivers lower operating costs, emissions reductions and superior performance to the global commercial trucking industry. Representing over 100,000 Class 8 commercial trucks globally, the council says it will collaborate closely with Hyliion to provide key user insights in the development of the platform.

Shell invests in LanzaJet

Hydrogen benefits highly utilized trucks

There is no denying the move towards alternative fuel solutions is gaining momentum with hydrogen and battery electric each surfacing as leaders depending on the use cases. For high utilization assets in particular, hydrogen is a winner, according to Brent Koski, vice president of hydrogen energy at Plug Power. “Whether it’s energy density or refueling times, hydrogen fuel cells are a better option than battery electric vehicles for high utilization assets like delivery trucks. For consumer vehicles, which are parked 95% of their lifetime, batteries make more sense,” he says.

And Plug Power is making solid inroads. Specifically, Plug Power and Brookfield Renewable recently announced plans to build a green hydrogen production plant utilizing 100% renewable energy from Brookfield Renewable’s Holtwood hydroelectric facility as part of previously announced partnership. The plant will be located along the Susquehanna River in south-central Pennsylvania.

Green hydrogen from this facility will support decarbonization of the broader transportation and logistics industries in the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic. The plant is expected to be online by late 2022, with construction slated to begin by in the first quarter of 2022. Once operational, the plant is projected to produce approximately 15 metric-tons of 100% emissions-free liquid hydrogen per day. It is also expected to create more than 25 green energy jobs in Pennsylvania.
